I recently worked on really defining my mission statement for my photography business, and when I did so, it really helped me realize “my story”. And with this realization, I created a new strategy for marketing my photography business. When I was able to tell “my story” behind my business, I was able to differentiate myself from other photographers. I am going to share some of my tips on how to use storytelling to market and promote your photography business for free!
Marketing is all about getting more customers to view your site or purchase your products, but what many people forget, is marketing is about making a connection with people. It’s the puzzle piece that ties sales and customer service together, but you can’t make a true connection without storytelling.
Think of it this way. When you read a book or watch a movie, you become extremely invested in the characters. You can’t wait to get to the end to find out what happens next. That’s what storytelling does for marketing. Storytelling is the final push, the emotional value, that you pour into your business. Clients want to know what your story is because clients want to know why YOU are the best answer to their problem! Clients want to know why you are the best photographer for them! What makes you unique? What life events have brought you to where you are today that enables you to be the best photographer for them?
Using Storytelling to Promote Your Photography Business
Making A Connection
With marketing, you have to know and understand people. Each sale is dependent upon your knowledge of your customers and their knowledge of your business. If you don’t know what motivates your customers, what their needs, wants and desires are, you can’t forge that emotional connection. It’s the ability to forge that connection using your knowledge of people, that makes storytelling so effective.
A Creative Approach to Advertising
Everywhere you look, whether it’s social media, television, or even newspapers, you’ll find advertisements. Most of these ads are missed opportunities for businesses, all because they chose not to tell their story. As a photographer, you have the added bonus of being able to tell a story through media, the most viewed format.
Tips for Telling Your Story
1. Start by asking yourself; How did I get into photography?
By answering this question, you have an opportunity to set yourself apart from your competitors.
2. Get this book and read it ASAP! Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen is by far the best resource out there for entrepreneurs looking to book more clients! I’ve read this book multiple times and listened to it on Audible.
3. Be creative – Make it VISUAL
Setting yourself apart by including your photography in every aspect of your marketing campaign. Did you photograph a wedding? Combine photos with a short post written about their big day or testimonials from the happy couple and their guests. Your story is your own, and it’s your choice of how you make it known.
4. Define your story elements.
There are 3 definitive elements that make up any story; the set-up (background, overall landscape), the narrative arc (peak problem or area of concern), and the resolution. Put your story from the point of view of your ideal client. Layout their journey, their problem, ways they try to solve or overcome it, and then the resolution (your services or product).
Telling your story doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s more about a potential customer’s way to get to know you without you speaking to each one individually.
