Why In-Studio Family Photos Are Way Less Stressful Than You Think

7/31/25

Last week, I had one of those “mom moments.” You know, the kind where your kid does something so effortlessly cute that you have to grab your camera before the moment slips away? That’s Baby Lake for me. Sometimes I bring him to The Green Room—my cozy, plant-filled photography studio here in Milwaukee and we just play around while I snap a few photos. It’s always low-stress, fun, and, honestly, some of my favorite memories with him.

It got me thinking… so many parents believe family photos have to be a big production. Matching outfits, perfect weather, kids who somehow smile on cue. But here’s the thing, in-studio family photos can actually be the most relaxed and enjoyable way to capture your family.

I designed The Green Room with that exact goal in mind. It’s not just a photography studio space, it’s a warm, welcoming space with comfy couch setups, a jungle of lush house plants (yes, Milwaukee’s only jungle studio!), and beautiful backdrops that work year-round. Let me share why I think every family should give in-studio sessions a try.

1. No Weather Stress, Ever

Wisconsin weather and family photos? A risky combo. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s raining sideways, and don’t even get me started on the humidity. In my studio, you don’t have to worry about a single weather app. The lighting is always perfect, the space is cozy, and you can just relax and enjoy the session.

When I bring Lake in, I don’t have to bundle him up or worry about the wind messing up his tiny curls. He can just be himself, and that’s when the magic happens.

2. It Feels Like Home, Only Better

I set up The Green Room to feel like a comfortable living room, but way prettier and without the chaos of toys scattered everywhere. Families love curling up on the couch, surrounded by house plants, while I work my camera magic.

Kids feel at ease in this kind of environment, and parents love it because they’re not constantly saying “don’t step in that puddle” or “watch out for the mud” or “please dont eat that bug.”

3. Creative Backdrops Without the Guesswork

In the studio, everything is styled and ready to go. I rotate backdrops and cozy sets so you can get a look that feels unique and timeless. Whether you want a clean and minimal vibe or something warm and earthy, we can make it happen.

4. No Prep Anxiety

When I say studio sessions are easy, I mean easy. You don’t have to haul snacks, bug spray, backup blankets, or worry about finding the right location. All you have to do is show up, take a deep breath, and let me guide your family through the session.

5. Timeless Photos You’ll Actually Want to Frame

In-studio family photos don’t scream “Fall 2023” or “that one snowy day.” They’re classic and beautiful, perfect for your walls or holiday cards. When I look back at the photos I take of Lake in the studio, I know they’ll feel just as special 20 years from now as they do today.

FAQs About In-Studio Family Photography

1. What should we wear for in-studio family photos?

Choose colors that complement each other and the backdrops—soft neutrals, earthy tones, or rich colors always photograph beautifully. Avoid overly bright or neon colors, and go for textures like knits, linen, or denim. If you are looking for outfits for your upcoming family session I have a page dedicated to outfit ideas HERE: Shop: Curated Outfits.

2. How long does a family studio session take?

My sessions last about 30 minutes to a little over an hour, which is the sweet spot for capturing plenty of great images without kids (or parents) getting tired.

3. Can we bring personal items or props?

Yes! Bring your child’s favorite toy, a cozy blanket, or even your family dog. It helps tell your story and makes the photos even more personal.

4. What makes The Green Room different from other photography studio spaces?

My studio space, called The Green Room is Milwaukee’s only jungle studio, filled with lush house plants, cozy seating, and curated backdrops. It’s designed to feel relaxed, creative, and warm—not like a sterile, cookie-cutter photo setup.

5. Do you offer mini sessions?

I currently offer 30-70 minute sessions year round. I occasionally offer shorter sessions, particularly around the holidays, but not often. Be sure to watch the fb page and instagram for these offerings.
