Why Having a Business Coach Isn’t a Luxury in 2026—It’s a Lifeline

1/07/26

A few years ago, I tried to teach myself how to do Scorpion Pose (Vrischikasana). I watched YouTube tutorials, read blog posts, even downloaded an app. And you know what? I still ended up toppling over like a poorly stacked Jenga tower. What I didn’t realize is that in order to do that pose, you need serious shoulder and arm strength to pull it off. We’re talking robust shoulders, steady forearms, and a core of steel. Turns out, I needed to be building all that by first mastering dolphin pose, plank, and my handstand.

No video or AI voiceover was telling me what I was doing wrong…and it would have been super helpful (and saved me a lot of time) if someone was right there watching me and saying, “Ren, your feet are too far apart! Engage your core! Your shoulders aren’t ready!” in real time. I needed someone to actually see what I was doing wrong and help me build the right foundation first.

My back/core/shoulders were definitely not strong enough to get from this into a scorpion!

So, my point is, for women trying to run a successful profitable photography business in 2026, is pretty much the same deal! I believe having a business coach isn’t a “nice-to-have” anymore. It’s the norm and more importantly, it’s what separates the thriving photographers from the ones stuck binge-watching free webinars, wondering why their calendar still looks like a ghost town.

The One Thing All Successful Business Owners Have in Common

Here it is, plain and simple: every single successful business owner I know works with a coach. They don’t just throw money at another self-paced course. They don’t rely on generic AI tips that tell them to “post more on Instagram.” They invest in real, human support—someone who gets it, someone who’s been there, someone who’s still in the trenches, building and growing.

I’ve been officially running Studio 29 Photography since July 2010. I’ve worked with premium clients, scaled my offerings, navigated market changes, and made a lot of big (and small) pivots. And guess what? I still have a coach. Because I know what it’s like to hit a plateau and not know what to do next.

Why AI Isn’t Enough

Don’t get me wrong, I love AI. Heck, I use it to write outlines, brainstorm, and keep things organized. But here’s what it can’t do:

  • Look at your pricing structure and say, “This is way too low for the value you’re offering.”
  • Spot the story you’re NOT telling in your brand.
  • See the way you’re self-sabotaging because you’re stuck in perfectionism (or comparison, or burnout).

AI is a tool, not a truth-teller. It can’t call you out, cheer you on, or help you rewrite that awkward sales page. A business coach? Can and will do all of that.

Why Random Reddit Advice Isn’t Advice

Reddit, forums, Facebook groups they’re great for some things. But they can also become echo chambers of bad advice from people who:

  • Don’t know your audience
  • Don’t charge what you do (or should)
  • Don’t understand your market
  • Don’t share your values
  • Don’t see the behind-the-scenes stuff you’re avoiding because it’s scary or hard
  • Are in no position to actually be giving you business advice

You deserve so much better than getting advice from random strangers on the internet who haven’t even walked in your shoes! They don’t you, your vision, your morals/values, etc and they have no stake in the game, besides a few thumbs up and replies in the comments.

The Backflip Analogy: Why Courses Aren’t Coaching

Think of it like this: online courses are like watching a video on how to do a backflip. Helpful, yesss, sure. But when you try it and keep landing on your butt? That video isn’t going to pause, walk over, and say, “Oh! Your feet—they’re the problem.” A coach is that person. They spot you. They tweak the angle. They prevent injuries (to your confidence and your wallet). Courses have their place, but they can’t give you feedback tailored to your messy, beautiful, one-of-a-kind business.

What You Do Need in 2026

You need someone who knows what it’s like to shoot 30+ weddings a year…and then choose to scale back.
You need someone who’s built a premium brand and learned how to market it.
You need someone who can say, “Hey, I’ve been there. Here’s what worked.”

That’s what I do.

I coach photographers who are ready to grow, simplify, and finally create a business that gives them more freedom (and way more profit).

I’m not teaching outdated methods or trends from the “good old days.” I’m sharing what works right now because I’m still doing it right now.
