Meet the Founder: Ren Lenhof
Most photographers think finding a rental studio is about light and square footage, but the real cost shows up in the details nobody mentions until you’re mid-shoot and realizing the windows face north, the furniture only looks good from one angle, and your client is changing clothes in a bathroom with no mirror.
Ren Lenhof built The Green Room because she spent a decade running Studio 29 Photography in Milwaukee and got tired of choosing between shooting at home (where her kids’ toys ended up in the background) and renting industrial spaces that made her clients feel like they were walking into a warehouse instead of a session that cost them $800.
She originally designed the space as her own private studio—a place where she could control the light, style the furniture to photograph well from every direction, and give her clients an experience that justified her pricing. The plants weren’t just aesthetic, they were strategic, because when a client walks into a space that feels intentional, they stop questioning whether they should have booked and start trusting that they made the right call.
But after a year of using the space for her own sessions, Ren realized something: the Milwaukee creative community didn’t need another industrial loft with cement floors and Edison bulbs. They needed a studio that functioned the way working photographers actually need studios to function, which meant the furniture had to work in both vertical and horizontal shots, the light had to stay consistent past 3pm, and there needed to be a place for clients to change that didn’t feel like an afterthought.
So when Ren isn’t using The Green Room for Studio 29 sessions, she rents it to other photographers and content creators who are tired of making their clients feel like they’re shooting in someone’s basement. Every detail in the space exists because Ren has shot in enough rental studios to know which corners get skipped when the person designing the space isn’t the person using it.
The West Elm furniture isn’t there because it’s trendy, it’s there because it photographs clean in natural light and doesn’t compete with your subject. The Lincoln Warehouse unit wasn’t chosen randomly, Ren mapped out how the sun moved through those specific west-facing windows before she signed the lease, because the difference between light that works until 2pm and light that works until 6pm is the difference between booking an evening session or turning it down. The service elevator access isn’t a luxury detail, it’s the reason you don’t have to haul equipment through a lobby while your client watches and wonders if you actually know what you’re doing.
When you rent The Green Room, you’re not just renting a space, you’re renting the systems Ren built for herself after years of losing bookings because her space didn’t make clients feel like they were investing in something worth the price. That’s not something you get from a landlord who’s never shot a session, and it’s the reason photographers who use the space once tend to rebook it.
