Photography Mentorship: The Fastest Way to Grow Your Business

9/10/25

Let me take you back to 2005. I was sitting on the floor of my bedroom, editing photos on a laptop covered in ZUMIEZ stickers, eating cereal straight from the box, and wondering if anyone would ever pay me more than $50 for a session.

Truthfully, I had a camera. I had passion. I had zero clue what I was doing.

Fast-forward to today, and Studio 29 Photography is a multi–six-figure business. I photograph hundreds of families and brands every year, work with dream clients, and (this part matters so much to me) still have the freedom to be present with my family and live creatively.

But if you think I got here by sheer hustle and good lighting alone, let me stop you right there. The biggest turning point in my photography business? Finding a mentor.

The Day I Stopped Googling Everything

Back then, my workflow looked like this: shoot a session, panic-edit for 10 hours, stress about pricing, redesign my logo for the 40th time, then fall asleep with Lightroom still open.

I was “figuring it out” on my own, but honestly? I was overwhelmed, second-guessing every decision, and learning in the slowest way possible: trial and error.

Then, something shifted. I found a mentor (business coach) who had already built the kind of thriving business I dreamed of and she was a mom of three!

She knew how to talk to clients, price her work, automate her systems, and market with confidence. She showed me that running a photography business didn’t have to feel like throwing spaghetti at the wall. With her guidance, I started making smarter decisions, faster. I raised my prices, streamlined my client experience, and learned how to treat my business like… well, a business.

5 Powerful Benefits of Having a Photography Mentor

Here’s why mentorship is one of the best investments you can make in your photography journey:

  1. Cuts through the noise
Stop bouncing between YouTube rabbit holes and Facebook group threads. A mentor gives you a clear, proven roadmap.
  2. Saves you years of mistakes
What took me years to figure out, I now teach my students in weeks. Mentorship accelerates your progress.
  3. Boosts your confidence
When someone who’s been where you are says, “You’ve got this,” it silences imposter syndrome and fuels your momentum.
  4. Provides business strategy support
From pricing to packages to workflows, mentors help you make strategic, profitable decisions.
  5. Helps you grow your unique style and voice
A great mentor doesn’t mold you into a clone. They help you grow into your own photographic voice, on your terms.

2. How can mentorship help me set and achieve photography business goals?

By using SMART goal-setting, providing accountability, and offering actionable feedback on what actually works in the real world.

Nope! Whether you’re just starting out or ready to go full-time, mentorship meets you where you are and helps you grow with clarity and confidence.
