You Ever Watch a Honey Bee Work

10/13/25

Just yesterday, I harvest 34 jars of golden honey from my own hive. Yep, I’m not just a photographer and mentor, I’m also a beekeeper!! And every time I drizzle my own organic honey on a breakfast bagel, I’m reminded how dang smart bees are!!

They don’t rush. They don’t second‑guess. They just… know what to do. Every honey bee has a role — the forager, the nurse, the queen; and they each trust the rhythm of the hive. No one’s yelling “You’re behind!” No one’s scrolling to see how the other bees are doing. They just show up, do their part, and the hive thrives.

When I started my photography business, I was the opposite of a honey bee. I buzzed around everywhere… chasing trends, comparing myself to everyone, trying to “figure it out” alone. I was busy, but not productive. Working hard, but not aligned. The shift happened when I realized: Success doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from knowing your role, your rhythm, your flow.

That’s what I teach inside my 90-day photography mentorship program. Because building a thriving business (and a peaceful life) as a mom isn’t about becoming a queen bee who does it all. It’s about building a hive that works  around you.

The Hive Method: 5 Steps to Build a Business That Thrives (Without You Burning Out)

Here’s a look into the “Hive Method” the framework I teach inside The Momtographer Method Mentorship. Whether you’re just getting started or feeling scattered, this method helps you build flow and focus.

1. Define Your Role (Know Your Core Work)

Bees don’t try to forage and tend larvae and rule the hive. They have clear roles, clear specialties.  In your photography business, identify your core work: the one or two things you love photographing most. Maybe it’s newborns or maybe it’s families.

  • Try this: Write down your top 3 favorite things to photograph and then narrow it down to two, and get really, reallllly good at it!

2. Block Your Bloom Time (Flow, Not Frenzy)

A bee doesn’t sprint through the day. It works in rhythm. You need the same for deep, creative work.

Pick your “bloom time” — a protected window for editing, writing, or planning. Turn off distractions. Treat it like a client appointment.

  • Try this: Block 2–3 hours this week as creative time. Stick to it. Notice what shifts.

3. Map the Hive Channels (Create Your Offer & Funnel)

Bees don’t wing it (ha). They follow known routes. You need offers and funnels that guide your clients in.

Start with one solid offer and build a simple funnel around it — email list, social posts, a referral system.

  • Try this: Sketch your funnel: where clients find you, what they’re offered, and how you guide them to your signature service.

4. Build Hive Helpers

No bee works alone. Neither should you.

Hiring a mentor who’s walked the path can be the ultimate hive helper. I work with you, alongside you, giving you exact directions and clear-cut strategies based on my 20 years as a photographer. I know the fastest way to get you using your camera, confidently photographing not just your own family, but others and actually getting paid for it!!!

5. Trust the Rhythm (Rest, Reflect, Recalibrate)

Bees don’t burn out. Their hives ebb and flow with the seasons. Your business — and life — should, too.

Make time for check-ins. Ask: What’s working? What’s draining me? What do I want more of?

  • Try this: End each week with one win and one lesson. Over time, that’s your compass.

A Real Story from the Hive

One of my students was doing all the things: posting daily, overdelivering to clients, spinning in her own head. After working with me, she defined her creative role, blocked bloom time, launched a clear offer, and brought on a part-time helper. A few weeks later, she had clarity, consistent bookings, and — her words — “space to breathe again.” Not because she did more. But because she finally aligned.

Meet Ashlynne — from “pushing random buttons” to fully booked family photographer 📸🐝

When Ashlynne joined The Momtographer Method, she had a camera and zero clue how to use it. Like, literally didn’t know what shutter speed was. But she had a vision: to take beautiful photos, build a business, and spend more time with her daughter.

Twelve weeks later? She’s not only confident behind the camera, she’s confidently booking paid sessions with real clients who love her work. She found her niche, crafted a clear offer, and is now proudly building a portfolio she’s excited to show off. Her words? “It’s not just a pipe dream. It’s something that has actually turned into a reality.” Ashlynne’s proof that you don’t need a fancy start, you just need a clear path, a little support, and a whole lotta heart. 💛
