If your brain says, “We should do family photos,” and your nervous system immediately replies, “Absolutely not,” you are my kind of person. Because I wholeheartedly believe family photo sessions are not a quiet walk through a meadow where everyone holds hands and gazes lovingly into the distance.
Real family photos usually involve snacks in pockets, fart noises behind the camera, and convincing a 4-year-old that standing next to his sister for 10 seconds is not a personal attack. That’s normal. That’s also why I’m very specific about how I run family sessions at Studio 29 Photography. This post is for the moms (and dads) searching “Milwaukee family photographer” or “family photos with toddlers” who want one thing… to know what they’re walking into before they book.
What you are are actually trying to figure out when your search “family photographer near me”…
Most families aren’t wondering if a photographer can “preserve the essence of childhood.” They’re wondering:
- Will this be stressful or easy?
- How long is it?
- What happens if my toddler melts down?
- Do I have to figure out poses?
- Are you good with kids who won’t cooperate?
That is why I LOVE giving my clients clear information because you deserve to know what a family session with me feels like, not just what it looks like!!
How long is a family photo session with Studio 29 Photography?
Mytypical family session is 45-70 minutes, give or take. That time frame is not random. It’s based on what kids can realistically do before the wheels fall off, and it lines up with what many family photographers consider a typical window for younger kids.
In 45 minutes, we can get a mix of:
- A few everyone-looking photos
- Sibling photos
- Individual photos of each kid
- Parent photos
- The good candid stuff that happens when you stop trying so hard
And I do it without dragging it out until everyone hates their outfit!!!!

Hi! I’m Ren Lenhof, and I cannot wait to capture your smiles!
What happens if your toddler cries, hides, or refuses to smile?
This is the part where I’m going to be very honest… toddlers are not auditioning for anything. They do not care about your Christmas card. They also have no interest in proving that you’re a competent adult in public.
So here’s what I do instead:
I don’t start by demanding performance. I start by letting your kid get comfortable.
I keep things moving. We don’t stand in one spot doing the same pose for 10 minutes.
I use tiny “wins” to build cooperation. One quick photo, then a break. Then we try again.
I talk to your kids like people, not props. It changes everything.
I bring the classic tricks. Movement prompts, silly sounds, and yes, bribery if that’s what the moment needs.
I’ve photographed enough toddlers to know the difference between “they need a minute” and “we pivot now.” That’s the job.
What if my kids won’t cooperate at all?
Here’s my opinion that not everyone agrees with… cooperation is not the goal.
Connection is the goal, and connection does not require a perfect performance. Some of the most loved images are the ones where your kid is being exactly who they are right now… clinging to you, squishing their cheeks into your shoulder, or laughing because Dad made the world’s worst fart noise.
If your kid is mid-meltdown, we don’t force it. We take a beat, have a snack, and we reset. We get what we can, and we let the session be real. It will all be OK, I promise.

“Will you tell us what to do?” Yes. The whole time.
You do not need to show up knowing how to pose. That is my job!!
I’ll guide you through:
- Where to stand so the light looks good
- What to do with your hands so you don’t feel awkward
- How to interact with your kids so it looks natural, not staged
- When to look at the camera and when not to
I just need you to show up, be happy, and love your people, and I promise, I’ll handle the rest!!!

What should we wear for family photos in Milwaukee?
This is Wisconsin… weather has opinions. Layers are your friend, and texture photographs beautifully, especially in fall and winter. My simple rule: start with what you feel good in, then build everyone else around that.
A few outfit notes that actually help:
- Neutrals and earthy tones photograph well outdoors, especially in fall.
- Knits, corduroy, denim, and layers add dimension (and keep you warmer).
- Avoid everyone in the exact same color. Coordinated beats matching.
If you book with me, I’ll help you narrow it down so you’re not panic-ordering outfits at 11:00 PM the night before!
Where do family photo sessions happen?
We’ll pick a location based on your vibe and your kids’ ages. Some families want Lake Michigan, some want tall grass, some want city texture, and some want a spot that’s five minutes from home because that’s what makes it doable.
If you’re local, you’ve probably seen families do sessions at places like parks, beaches, my gorgeous photography studio, and trails around Milwaukee. But hands down, the best location is the one that fits your family’s pace, not the one that looks the most Pinterest-perfect.
What you get after your session
After your session, you’ll see your images for the first time at your virtual reveal appointment, and we will walk you through the next steps for ordering your custom coffee table album so you’re not stuck wondering what to print or how to use your photos.
My boundary: I don’t want you booking family photos just to let them rot in a folder on your phone. I’ll help you turn them into something you actually see in your home!! Studio 29 has an in-house art and album specialist, so you will be taken care of from start to finish!
The quick “is Studio 29 a good fit?” Checklist
Studio 29 Photography is for you if you want family photos that feel like your family… playful, connected, and real, even if your toddler is feral.
It might not be the best fit if you’re looking for a session where your kids are expected to be silent, still, and perfectly posed the entire time. That’s not my thing, and it’s not realistic for most families anyway.
FAQs
How long are family photo sessions?
Most family photo sessions are around 30–60 minutes, and my standard family session is 45 minutes because it’s long enough to get variety without pushing kids past their limit.
What if my toddler has a meltdown during family photos?
We pause, reset, and pivot. I plan for real kid behavior, and I guide you through what to do so it doesn’t spiral.
Do you help with posing?
Yes. You will not be left guessing what to do with your hands or how to stand. I’ll direct you the whole time.
What should we wear for fall or winter family photos in Wisconsin?
Layers and texture photograph beautifully, and staying within a color family helps everything look cohesive without matching exactly.
