High School Senior Portrait Season has begun!

Here are a few tips & tricks that will make you look awesome in your senior portrait photos.

  • Keep in mind that lighter colors (especially white), tight fitting tops, and horizontal lines tend to accent weight (very loose fitting white will usually look fine).
  • If you don’t want your arms to be obvious, wear a long sleeve shirt instead of a short sleeve or a tank top.
  • Darker colors (especially black), loose-fitting clothing, and vertical lines have a more slimming effect.
  • It’s a good idea to wear at least one outfit that will likely not be labeled specific for our current fashion trend. The thing about fashion is that it goes out of fashion. You might be happy with your photos for a year, then be terribly embarrassed you actually wore such an outfit five years down the road. Choose at least one outfit that is simple and classy.
  • Don’t be afraid to accessorize!
  • Girls, apply makeup as if you were going out for the evening, paying special attention to your eyes. Too little and you’ll look pale and washed out but too much could start to get a little scary
  • If you wear braces, don’t be self-conscious about smiling! If you don’t like your braces in your portraits, they can be removed digitally (braces removal is $50).
  • Bring someone with you to ease your photo-butterflies. Guests are invited to watch the photo session, help with clothing, hair, etc.
  • Bring photos you like from magazines, books, catalogs, and any other sources, to your session. I will use these images to form an idea of the photographic styles and “looks” you like. The more I know about what you want during your session, the easier it will be to constantly take the kinds of pictures you like.
  • Guys: Belts! Belts! Belts! Every outfit could benefit from the appropriate belt style.
  • Layers! Wearing clothing that you can layer will get you more variety. Example: Wear a sweatshirt hoodie with a different top, polo, or t-shirt underneath. That way you can get a few pictures in the hoodie, remove that, and get some more photos in the shirt underneath. More pictures & more variety = awesome
  • Get plenty of sleep the night before your Senior Portrait Session. You won’t have bags under your eyes, you’ll be alert and responsive to your photographer, and you’ll be in a great mood. Naturally, it will show in your senior pictures!
