As a parent, there are few things more important to you than your child. One of the ways you can capture your child’s precious moments is through newborn photography.

However, if you’re new to this, it can be difficult to know what to do to ensure that your photo session goes smoothly. In this blog post, we will provide 6 tips for a successful newborn photo session!

7 Tips For a Successful Newborn Photo Session

1. Choose a photographer who has experience photographing newborns.

It’s essential to find a photographer (me) who has prior experience in taking newborn photos. Look for someone with a portfolio of successful newborn photo sessions, and ask them questions about their techniques, experience, and lighting equipment.

2. Brainstorm Location & Photo Ideas

You must think ahead and start brainstorming location and photo ideas right away. Decide if you want to have the photographer in your home or prefer to go outside or to a studio. Either way, you should ensure you browse and choose the right Photography Backdrops to have as part of your newborn photo session. Work with your photographer to ensure you discuss the best location and poses ahead of time, so you’re prepared when the time rolls around to start shooting the camera.

3. Prepare Your Outfits

Look for ideas online to see what other families wear for newborn photography sessions, and ask your photographer for suggestions. However, also take into account your personal taste and style. Coordinate colors and make sure that you’re choosing clothes that will look good in pictures. Pick something timeless so you can look back on these photos fondly in years to come because the goal is to look timeless and stylish without detracting from your new bundle of joy.

4. Dress your baby in comfortable clothes that won’t restrict movement.

When choosing the clothing for your baby, remember that comfort is key. A comfy outfit will help make sure your little one stays content throughout the session. Avoid any items with tight collars or buttons that might be uncomfortable for them. Simple, classic outfits with neutral colors look best in newborn photos, so pick something timeless.

Also, keep in mind that babies have very sensitive skin. Avoid any clothes with scratchy fabrics or decorations like sequins, which can be too rough for their delicate skin. Make sure to dress your baby in layers so you can easily adjust if they get too hot or cold during the shoot.

5. Take Breaks

If you want to have a smooth newborn photo session, then you’ll want to ensure that you have some time to take a few breaks. You may need to feed your baby or simply want to take a break from smiling and posing. A quick feeding and cuddling may help put your newborn at ease again if you notice they’re fussing a lot. A few breaks will help ensure the session goes well and that you capture all the different moments and poses you desire.

6. Use Props & Include the Pets

Props can also be a great way to add interest and variety to your newborn photos. Bring items that represent special memories or family traditions, like blankets, hats, or stuffed animals. These props can make the session more fun and give you unique photos of your baby that you’ll cherish forever. Just be sure they are safe and easy for your baby to handle.

I like using neutral-colored swaddles and my Moses basket, and I always include pets during my newborn photo sessions.

Also, consider bringing some items with textures, such as baby-safe fabrics like tulle or muslin, that can be draped and arranged creatively for the photos. If you have baby siblings, bring them along too! This can result in some beautiful shots of your growing family bonding together.

7. Get Some Sleep & Rest Prior

If there’s one task you should add to your to-do list for having a successful newborn photo session, it’s to get as much sleep and rest before the shoot as possible. While it can be tricky with a newborn, pick a day and time that works for you and where you can rest up before getting in front of the camera. The more sleep you get, the fewer dark circles you’ll have to deal with and cover up before the photo session starts. Also, the better mood you’ll all be in, and more fun it’ll be overall.

8. Plan For Messes

Plan ahead for potential messes and accidents. It’s a good idea to have plenty of wipes, diapers, and additional clothing on hand in case of accidents.

9. Relax & Have Fun

Nothing or no one is perfect, so avoid setting too high expectations for your newborn photo session. What’s most important is that you’re all relaxed in front of the camera and enjoying one another’s company.

. Relax and enjoy the session! Don’t stress about getting the perfect shot. Have fun with the session, and let your photographer capture your baby’s special moments.
