Lake Michigan Family Photo Sessions in Milwaukee

If you’re searching for a Milwaukee family photographer or looking for the perfect location for your next family photo session, let me introduce you to my favorite backdrop: Lake Michigan.

As a family photographer based right here in Milwaukee, I’ve shot at tons of beautiful locations—but Lake Michigan always tops my list. Whether we’re at Atwater Beach, Doctors Park, Bradford Beach, or Grant Park, Lake Michigan offers everything I want for your family session: natural beauty, soft light, and space for your family to simply enjoy being together.

Why Lake Michigan Is Perfect for Family Photos

After photographing 100+ families on Lake Michigan, I’ve got lots to share when it comes to the perfect locations for family portraits!

1. Natural, Timeless Backdrop
Lake Michigan gives us a clean, simple backdrop that never feels trendy or overdone. The water, sand, and sky create a timeless look you’ll love now and 10 years from now.

2. Soft, Beautiful Light
The light coming off Lake Michigan—especially around sunrise or sunset—is some of the best light we get in Milwaukee. Even on overcast days, the soft diffused light off the lake creates a flattering, natural glow for your family photos.

3. Relaxed, Candid Moments
The open space helps everyone feel comfortable. Kids have room to run and play, which makes for the most natural smiles and genuine family interaction. You don’t have to worry about posing—we keep it simple and relaxed so you can enjoy your time together.

4. Easy Access for Milwaukee Families
Whether you’re in Shorewood, Fox Point, South Milwaukee, or right in the city, Lake Michigan is easy to get to. Some of my most requested Lake Michigan locations include:

• Atwater Beach (Shorewood)
• Doctors Park (Fox Point)
• Bradford Beach (Milwaukee)
• Southshore Park (Milwaukee BayView)
• Virmond Park (Mequon)
• Lion’s Den (Grafton)
• Grant Park Beach (South Milwaukee)
• Port Washington Lakeshore

Each location has a slightly different vibe, from wide open beaches to wooded bluffs overlooking the water.

When to Book Your Lake Michigan Family Session

I photograph family sessions at Lake Michigan throughout the year, but my most popular months are late spring, summer, and early fall. Golden hour (the hour right after sunrise or before sunset) gives us that soft, dreamy light that works perfectly for outdoor family photos.

If you’re hoping to schedule a summer or fall session, I recommend booking early to secure your date. Weekend sessions, especially during peak fall color, tend to fill up quickly.
